Luc Mestdagh (°1953)

Glass painter

A master in his art

Our master painter Luc Mestdagh learned his profession from his father Albert, the founder of Atelier Mestdagh. He was taught in the famous late neogothic studio of Hendrik Coppejans in Ghent. So, Luc was able to learn from the very best! And he did. As a child, he helped his father. This gave him the chance ‘to steal with his eyes’ and learn the tricks of the trade. After the sudden death of his father, he took on the leadership of several projects, later taking over the business completely. He and his wife Ingrid Meyvaert formed the perfect tandem which enabled the studio to grow.

From craftsman to master glazier

Luc may rightly call himself a master in glass painting, with numerous impressive projects to his name. His extensive technical knowledge and artistic skill form the basis for the craft that he masters to perfection. Thanks to the ‘Apprenticeship Scheme’ subsidised by the Flemish government, he can pass his knowledge of glass painting to the third generation (Katrien Mestdagh and Laura Ten Zeldam).

Luc officially retired in April 2018 but with 45 years’ experience and as much (or even more!) love for the craft as ever, he can still be found in the studio every week.
